Introduction: Key Messages

The following list is a summary of the key messages contained in the programme. They will be explained in more detail as you progress through:

  • Do not ignore the situation you are in - it will not go away and the longer you leave it the worse it will get.
  • Stop worrying about your debts alone-share your problems with family and friends who may be able to help you with your situation - if only by providing you with emotional support.
  • Make a clear list of all your creditors (people you owe money to) and the debts you owe them.
  • Get in touch immediately with all your creditors and explain your difficulties using the letter templates or telephone briefs contained with the Programme. Your creditors are not as scary as you may think and will often be sympathetic towards genuine debt problems.
  • Use this Programme to work out your Financial Statement-this must specify your income, living expenses and any other financial obligations. It will show what you have left to pay your debts. Send it to all your creditors when advising them of your difficulties.
  • Make sure you tackle your priority debts first-those debts which could mean you may lose your home, essential services or even lead to imprisonment.
  • Using this Programme, work out a reasonable offer to repay the money you owe. Even if it is a token payment, your creditors would prefer to receive a small amount regularly than nothing at all.
  • Always respond to Court Forms immediately and let the Court have all the facts. They will use this information to decide how much and over what timescale you should pay your creditors.
  • Always attend court hearings. Take a copy of your financial statement with you.
  • Check you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to receive.
  • Use the information contained in this Programme to see if you can increase your income or reduce your expenditure in any way.
  • Set up a spending diary to keep control of your finances-set time aside to go through your expenses and ensure you are staying within your spending limits as set out on the financial statement.

The most important point is not to give up. It may take some time to finally regain control of your finances - but you will get there in the end.
